Bridging Eastern China and Western China
In the summer of 2006, my friend Lily Gong and I organized, under the auspices of a Rotarian, a group of college volunteer students to teach in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. When I was in Gannan, I was astonished at the huge gap in education facility and quality between China’s underdeveloped and developed regions. In Gannan, students of different grades were crowded in a ramshackle cottage and only one teacher was available. In the course of voluntary service, we helped to improve the education quality for elementary students in one school and designed English language training courses for local tour guides. On the basis of this experience, we set up a regular summer teaching program afterwards, named “Four-leaf Clover Program”, meaning the dream and hope for better education quality in rural China. And this year “Four-leaf Clover Program” celebrated its ten years anniversary.
